Bright Falls Episode 5 Sheds Some Light!

Since watching the first four episodes of Bright Falls last week, I've been eagerly anticipating the final two episodes to round out this excellent series. As I said last time, the game is going to be hard pressed to top what has been achieved here, and after watching Episode 5 I'm even more convinced of this fact. I'd originally intended to watch both of the new episodes before I wrote anything here, but by the end of the first one I was already inspired. Although intended as a prequel to Remedy's Alan Wake game, Bright Falls is taking on a life and a fan base all of its own.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover I'd been quoted on the excellent Bright Falls fan site with regard to whether Alan Wake the game could live up to Alan Wake the prequel series. It was nice to know I'm not alone in my opinion and I highly recommend that folks continue to follow developments at the Bright Falls fan site (I know I will be). I don't know if there's anywhere they can go with this, but I hope to God they do. Watching the extras on the Limited Edition version of Alan Wake, I saw the Remedy Games team discussing how they'd like to see Alan Wake/Bright Falls jump into other media, but it seems it already has (even before the game has officially hit).

Bright Falls 1 Christopher Forsyth Allison Lange Phillip Van Alan WakeSo, what was so great about Episode 5? Well, we had what I like to call some wonderful 'penny dropping' moments ... If you've not seen the episode yet then I recommend stopping now and doing it, otherwise there's some pretty big spoilers ahead. With this episode, things start to come full circle and you begin to see just what's been going on behind the scenes with Jake Fischer. The enigmatic Dr Hartman makes another appearance and Jake confides in him about what's been going on. Is it just the cardigans that make Dr Hartman so creepy? The doctor shines a light in Jake's eye causing him to recoil in pain and fear ... Aha! Now the ties to the game are really coming through. Has he become one of 'The Taken' that Alan Wake must fight? Just what is possessing him and robbing his memories each time he wakes up?

In a moment that had me both cheering and watching anxiously, Jake used to duct tape to restrain himself and set up a video camera to record what happened next. The results were not pretty and when Jake came to, he discovered he'd completely trashed the room in which he was staying. He'd either had too much Jagermeister and invited Tommy Lee around the night before or something seriously wrong was happening. It was a genuinely chilling and scary moment as Jake had this revelation. This is the quality of Bright Falls which makes it so excellent to watch. Director, Phillip Van, and Director of Photography, Lyle Vincent, have crafted such a unique film that they actually place you in the story in a way that even the game doesn't manage. It's a rare feat and it probably explains why I've enjoyed this so much.

Bright Falls 2 Christopher Forsyth Allison Lange Phillip Van Alan WakeAs a potential Easter Egg, I've noticed that Jake's number plate is VAN 0124. I wonder if perhaps Phillip Van's birthday is January 24 or there is some other significance to these numbers? Questions have been answered, while more have been asked, and I have just one episode left in which to get them and enjoy my last taste of Bright Falls. It's a bittersweet moment, and I get the feeling I'm going to be scared out of my pants in the process, but I can't wait any longer. I just have to watch Episode 6 and see where this goes. Wish me luck ... Bright Falls beckons once again.
